OU attack case: KCR warns against arrest of students

OU attack case: KCR warns against arrest of students
Hyderabad, 30th Aug: Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) president K. Chandrasekhar Rao has said that his party will force closure of educational institutions in Telangana if anyone was arrested for the attack on lecturers from coastal districts on Osmania University campus on Saturday.

The situation could turn volatile in Telangana if the police went ahead with the arrests, he said while addressing a large gathering of people led by former Praja Rajyam leaders from Nalgonda district who joined the TRS on Monday. Mr. Rao noted that educational institutions in coastal districts remained closed on Monday due to the incident on Osmania University campus.

If that be so, he said a similar step would be taken in Telangana in the event of police arresting anyone. He said the students who confronted the lecturers did nothing wrong as they were only protesting that people from outside the region should not evaluate the answer scripts of B.Ed. exam.

Their action was justified because 20,000 students were aggrieved by biased valuation of answer sheets in the last Intermediate exams. Mr. Rao denied the role of TRS in slogan shouting against Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu while he was proceeding to Bayyaram to participate in a dharna on Monday.

It was done by TDP workers themselves. The police needlessly arrested a large number of TRS supporters in this connection. Asking Mr. Chandrababu Naidu why he should move in the region, Mr. Rao allegedthat police arrested TRS men whenever leaders from other parties toured.

Telangana agitations may not stops the Foreign students to join OU

Hyderabad, 25th Aug: Contrary to fears that Hyderabad will not be a preferred destination for foreign students in view of the Telangana agitation, the number of foreigners seeking higher education at Osmania University has increased considerably compared to last year.

So far, the University has processed applications of 1,700 students while the number of admitted candidates was only 1,463 last year. The number is likely to cross 2,000 with MBA, MCA and Engineering admissions yet to begin.

“This is a reflection of the craze for Osmania University education among foreigners and the structured admission process adopted by the University,” says T.L.N. Swamy, Director, University Foreign Relations Office (UFRO). He agreed that the university feared some drop due to constant media focus on campus agitations but now they are happy that the image is not dented.

An interesting aspect is the enhancement of students supported by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and those supported by their respective countries through scholarships.

The ICCR allocates foreign students to different universities and if it feared disturbances in OU, it would have opted for other varsities in the country. Out of the 1,700 applications processed, nearly 500 are ICCR sponsored candidates. Last year only 149 sponsored candidates were admitted.

Prof. Swamy says that 214 candidates have applied for Ph.D this year, of which 149 have already been issued admission letters and most of these candidates are sponsored by their respective Governments. It also reflects the confidence of those Governments in OU academics.

Number of students getting admitted in Certificate Course in English for Foreign Students (CCFS) is also increasing. This one-year programme is a hit with students from China, Middle East and Central Asia where students are poor in English language and communication skills. They take up regular courses after acquiring the necessary skills here.

Hyderabad, Aug 25 (PTI) An 11-day BJP organised "Telangana martyr memorial yatra" to console families of those who sacrificed for the cause of Telangana, would begin tomorrow in Nalgonda district of Andhra Pradesh. BJP MLA of Nizamabad Laxminarayana, who defeated APCC President D Srinivas, would launch the yatra at Podichedu village in Nalgonda district, former union minister and senior BJP leader Bandaru Dattreya told reporters here today. The yatra would touch 500 villages in five districts of Nalgonda, Mahabubnagar, Rangareddy, Hyderabad and Medak in south Telangana, he said. Besides consoling family members of those who sacrificed their lives for the cause of Telangana, the aim of yatra was to expose ruling Congress party and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) for their double speak on Telangana issue, Dattatreya said.

Several party leaders including state unit president G Kishan Reddy, national secretary Dr K Laxman and others would participate in the yatra and address the public meetings,he said. Demanding the government to withdraw the cases booked against students for participating in the separate Telangana movement, Dattatreya appealed to students not to commit suicides and fight for separate state. .

TDP will cease to exist: KCR

TDP will cease to exist: KCR

HYDERABAD: Telangana Rashtra Samithi president K Chandrasekhar Rao has warned TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu that the TDP would cease to exist in the region if the party did not change its stand on separate statehood.

Speaking to party workers here today after admitting TDP workers from Adilabad district into his party, KCR demanded that the TDP should submit a memorandum to the Srikrishna Committee in favour of Telangana. Otherwise, Naidu should forget about the TDP in the region, the TRS chief said.

Referring to Naidu's comments earlier in the day that KCR raked up the Tagitation only because he was not given a berth in Chandrababu Naidu's cabinet during 19992004, the TRS chief said he had worked hard in the TDP and did become a minister during Naidu's earlier term. That ministry was not a gift or alms from Naidu, he said.

Naidu also said that he groomed Rao in the TDP. Reacting to this, Rao said he was in the TDP well before Naidu entered the party. "You cannot spend time accusing the TRS. You should make your stand clear before Srikrishna Committee," Rao advised TDP leaders.

On Congress MLA J C Diwakar Reddy's objections to celebrating Telangana Liberation Day, Rao recalled that Karnataka was celebrating Liberation Day in a grand manner. Diwakar Reddy should understand this, Rao said. TRS chief demanded that Congress leaders should prevail upon chief minister K Rosaiah and see that T Liberation Day was celebrated officially.

Chandrasekhar Rao said the KagaznagarBhupalpally belt would be developed as an industrial zone once separate Telangana was carved out. He said Adilabad would be beautified like Kashmir.

Meanwhile, Rao in a letter to the chief minister wanted the government to supply required fertilisers to farmers. He objected to nonIAS officers from the forest department holding the Markfed managing director's post.

KCR demands: Govt to celebrate Telangana Liberation Day on Sept.17

KCR demands: Govt to celebrate Telangana Liberation Day on Sept.17

Hyderabad, 22nd Aug: Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) president K. Chandrasekhar Rao has warned of a severe backlash if the State government did not officially celebrate the Telangana Liberation Day on September 17.

Reacting to reported refusal of Chief Minister K. Rosaiah to concede the demand during his visit to Warangal on Sunday, Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao asked here what was the objection of the State government to observe the occasion officially when Maharashtra and Karnataka were doing it in parts of their own States that were liberated from the erstwhile Hyderabad State.

Is it to see that the people of Telangana lost their identity?. “Are we not part of the State?”, he questioned. Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao asserted that there was no way the government could escape from celebrating the occasion. Otherwise, it must face a major agitation.

He asked Congress MPs and MLAs in Telangana to pull down the government by quitting the party. This was a testing time for them as the self-respect of Telangana was involved. The Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief also said he would meet Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan and Mr. Rosaiah to convey to them the party's stand on the issue.

They would be forewarned that the administration would be paralysed if the demand was not met. Earlier, Mr. Rao admitted into Telangana Rashtra Samiti several Telugu Desam and Praja Rajyam supporters from Nalgonda and Ranga Reddy districts.

He promised a 355 km flood flow canal from Jurala project in Mahbubnagar to Pakal lake in Warangal district in separate Telangana.
No government in the past had designed such a project to supply water to Telangana by gravity at least when there were flash floods in Krishna, the Telangana Rashtra Samiti president said.

The State government always contemplated lift irrigation projects in the region with a view to promote micro irrigation and economise supply of water. On the other hand, a 400 km canal was excavated as part of Telugu Ganga project in coastal districts.
